Reeves must seal deal with Trump
Donald Trump’s idiotic tariff war is causing chaos around the globe.
And Rachel Reeves now has a big job on her hands trying to sort out the mess.
The chancellor faces a tough balancing act when she visits Washington next week to talk tariffs with Trump.
She needs to let the US know she will not be bullied – but at the same time try to appear open to negotiations.
Reeves says in today’s Daily Record she would rather walk away empty handed than accept a bad deal.
She is absolutely right to take that stance.
There have to be some “red-line” issues which she will not compromise on – such as food standards.
Otherwise we will see our country swamped by cheap, sub-standard US imports such as heavily chlorinated chicken.
The US president has behaved like a tantrum-prone toddler, trying to punish countries with tariffs because they’re not giving him what he wants.
He claims this will help US manufacturing and create more jobs – but
all it has done so far is make everyone poorer.
The people who will suffer most from his tariffs are the hard-working people of all countries – the millions who rely on jobs created by the smooth operation of the global economy.
Trump and his billionaire cronies don’t care if farmers go bust or factories making goods for export close.
They’ll be unaffected in their super-yachts and offshore tax-havens.
Reeves, on the other hand, could help restore some common sense and decency to US economic policy on her trip across the Pond.
And if she returns with a deal which keeps vital trade links going between Britain and US, the whole country will breath a sigh of relief.

Peril for parents
It is every parent’s worst nightmare to see their child suffer bullying at the hands of hate-filled thugs.
To find out a son or daughter has been hunted down via a social media platform to be assaulted is even more sickening.
But that’s what happened to 13-year-old Sofia Todd, whose mum is bravely speaking out in today’s Daily Record to highlight how online platforms can put kids at risk.
The gang that attacked Sofia were able to trace her whereabouts by using her Snapchat account.
The app is used innocently by millions of kids around the world to catch up with pals – but this time it was used as a tool to track an innocent young girl in order to subject her to a brutal beating.
For parents, the message here is clear.
Educate yourself on the power of social media – and make sure your children are not at risk.
